The Katy Perry Takedown Menu:

Dr. Luke collaboration. Cultural appropriation. Space tourism. CERN visits. Failed album rollouts. Taylor Swift feud. General cringe moments.

My friend Orlando wrote, “ Why Does Everyone Suddenly Hate Katy Perry?” about this Perry Pile On and I had some thoughts to add and a story to share… with all of you.

Everyone’s dragging her again. The memes, the takedowns, the performative disgust. Same energy we had for Britney in 2007, Lindsay in 2010. We said we learned from that. We said we’d be better.

Apparently not.

Here’s the thing about celebrity culture: we love building people up so we can tear them down. Then we act shocked when they’re not perfect. Like being famous means you stop being human. Like having money means you can’t make mistakes.

I have a story about meeting Katy Perry that perfectly captures why this whole cycle is broken. What she did was so absurd, so telling about power and ego, that it’s stuck with me for over a decade.
