Yes. It’s the final week before Christmas and I am here for every moment of dululu this holiday season. You bake the ham and trim the trees and decorate the house and buy and wrap the presents and fill every stocking. I see you. You who made sure to buy new candles and wash the napkins. MOTHERRRRRRRRRR.

I remember very few dark holiday moments. Maybe one dark rum eggnog moment on Christmas Eve where my intrusive thoughts were on the tip of shouts. I was sitting by the fire, tending to it, watching the kids play Wii. Maybe for an hour, I imagined jumping to my stockinged feet, flailing my arms and yelling,

“I DO ALL OF IT! I WILL STAY UP FOR THREE HOURS AFTER YOU GO TO BED I WILL OPEN COMPLICATED THICK BOXES AND ZIP TIES. AND I WILL ASSEMBLE EVERYTHING SECRETLY AND QUIETLY ALL BY MYSELF BECAUSE THE RUM MADE YOUR FATHER PASS OUT IN MY PARENTS BED AN HOUR AND A HALF AGO! I AM SANTA CLAUS GODDAMNIT!”

Instead, I sigh and passive aggressively build my fire larger and larger throughout the evening. Cackling while they worry, “How can Santa make it down with the fire so big, Mom?” I’d nod. “Exactly.”
”SSSSSAANNNNNTTTAAAAA!!!!!!!”

And yet, despite that last paragraph, I hold the opposite of bitterness for all the work I’ve put into the twenty-two years of Holidays I’ve celebrated with my children. I know they love the Holidays and I know that is because of me. To give, to make memories is what feels human to me.

Because I am so festive, I am offering a discount on subscriptions until Christmas Day. Every dollar you use to subscribe goes directly and automatically to my children and always has.
